Concerts and academic sessions of the 35th Kraków International Festival of Composers explore themes of spaciousness in music. The event’s special guest will be Federico Gardella, composer and lecturer at the Milan Conservatory, while performers include a strong representation from the Baltic countries, including Chordos Quartet from Lithuania (inauguration concert, 15 April, Manggha Museum, in programme: Nam, Buffa, Neuwirth Ryczek, Gardella), the Latvian harpsichordist Ieva Saliete, and the Anna-Liisa Eller and Taavi Kerikmäe duo intertwining electronica with the sounds of a kannel – a traditional Estonian instrument related to the zither. The programme is dominated by 20th-century music and the latest works, including a premiere of the piece awarded the grand prix at the 6th Krzysztof Penderecki International Competition for Young Composers, interpreted by Quasars Ensemble from Slovakia.
