Luca Marenzio, composer and singer of the late Renaissance born near Brescia, was one of the most renowned composers of madrigals of the late 16th century. He wrote some of the most famous examples of the form in its late stage of development, prior to its early Baroque transformation by Monteverdi. Marenzio spent most his life in Italy and most of his career–in Rome. However, he also had a Kraków and Warsaw episode in his biography: towards the end of his life, he went to Poland and accepted a position as maestro di cappella at the court of Sigismund III Vasa in Warsaw (and occasionally Kraków) wrote and directed sacred music.
The music of Italian composer returns to Poland with the concert of the ensemble of the cathedral in Vercelli.
