“This is not merely a festival of concerts; it is an invitation to a musical salon—a place for meeting, discovery, and experiencing art together,” say the organisers of the Kraków Music Salon, which format harkens back to the 19th-century tradition of musical gatherings among family and friends. They invite audiences to prestigious venues that nonetheless evoke the feel of a private party among friends: the Fontana Hall at the Krzysztofory Palace and the Music Salon on Studencka Street. This intimate atmosphere is complemented by the repertoire, featuring evenings dedicated to art songs (Brahms, Weinberg, Laks, Chopin, Szymanowski, Mendelssohn), quartets and quintets (Moniuszko, Mozart, Bacewicz), and piano four-hands works (Schubert, Gershwin). The music—which demands attentive listening yet rewards it with extraordinary emotions—will be performed by artists including mezzo-soprano Hanna Hipp, sopranos Dorota Szczepańska and Ewa Tracz, pianists Grzegorz Mania and Jakub Kuszlik, and violist Mateusz Doniec, and ensembles such as the Reverie Piano Duo, the Sinfonietta Cracovia Quartet, the Airis String Quartet, and the FudalaRot Duo. As the festival marks its tenth edition, we can confidently say that the tradition of salon music-making is not a closed chapter of history but one that can successfully endure into the 21st century.
