The summer opera season begins in May with the premiere of Johann Strauss II’s operetta Wiener Blut. In June, the festival will take place in a truly royal place - the Wawel arcaded courtyard will be filled with the sounds of Aida (with phenomenal Aleksandra Kurzak in the title role!), Tosca, Bona Sforza and Nabucco (shown for the first time outside the theatre at Lubicz 48). Set against the lush backdrop of the Botanical Garden, the New York Music Show will feature hits from musicals and American popular music from the 1950s and 1960s. Dance enthusiasts will certainly enjoy Carmen’s Love Affairs and Romeo and Juliet - the latter performed by the Plovdiv Opera Ballet Company as a guest performance. In July, we will be swept up in the small-town intrigues of The Thieving Magpie (La gazza ladra) and in the festival’s August finale, we will be entertained by ball masks and fancy dress in The Bat.
