Capella Cracoviensis borrowed the title of this concert from Gustav Klimt. Quite perversely, as the Viennese painter and graphic artist's "Alle Art ist erotisch" had much to do with carnal passion. Meanwhile, the Kraków ensemble translates his bon mot into Polish as "All art is sensual" and reaches for... sacred music – the concert program includes Franz Liszt's Missa Choralis, Johannes Brahms's Geistliches Lied, and Arvo Pärt's Salve Regina. As the artists demonstrate, this contrasting juxtaposition is not just an empty provocation, as religious works also use the language of the senses (e.g., the timbres of human voices, harmonies) and have a powerful impact on the senses of the audience. Music can, therefore, direct us toward the spiritual, but it can also be experienced on a purely physical level, experiencing – and we sincerely hope so! – the simple pleasure of listening to it.
