Having turned just 29 in January, he has already got an imposing artistic track record. He serves as artistic director of the Silesian Philharmonic in Katowice and music director of the Baltic Opera in Gdańsk. From 2020 till 2022, he was the first guest conductor of the Neue Philharmonie Hamburg. He has performed, among others, at Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie, Stockholm's Konserthuset and the Bayreuth Festival. He has received nominations for Polityka’s Passports (2023), the Fryderyk Award (2024) and the International Opera Awards in the Rising Star category (also 2024). ‘Maturity does not have to mean competence, and youth does not have to mean lack of competence,’ says Yaroslav Shemet, a Ukrainian-Polish conductor whose talent and career are a great illustration of the change (of thinking? generational change?) that has taken place in his profession, which until recently was associated only with years of experience and stately grey hair. We will be applauding the artist in Krakow very soon – during concerts offered by the Kraków Philharmonic at the end of the carnival. Appropriately for the occasion, the programme comprises only hits: George Gershwin’s An American in Paris, Maurice Ravel's Piano Concerto in G major (with Christophe Alvarez in solo parts) and Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 in E minor "From the New World".
