If you ask people what they have in mind when they hear African music, they are usually going to say “rhythm and energy” - and they won’t be wrong. Of course, it is never that simple – after all, Africa is a vast and diverse continent. That is why it might be worth your while to come and see the Pod Baobabem Festival, which was founded by Senegalese multi-instrumentalist Ablaye Badji. You can consider it a gateway to distant cultures and a chance to meet the traditions of the world coming together in Krakow. The third edition of the event will be hosted by two clubs at the AGH University of Science and Technology campus. On 28 June, the Zaścianek Club will host the founding father of the event with The Ablaye Badji Band, showcasing material from their new album Aduna (Life). Next day, The Afronauts, a Krakow-based Afrobeat band that combines influences of funk, jazz and African culture in its music, will perform at the Gwarek Club. The concert programme features works by artists from Nigeria, Mali and Ghana, as well as original compositions. (Bartosz Suchecki, Karnet)
