For over a century, extraordinary constructions commemorating the birth of Christ have been made in our city. In 1937, the efforts of Cracovian craftsmen were formalised, and the 1st Nativity Scene Competition was held. Ever since, aside from a short break during the Second World War, on the first Thursday of December, nativity scene-makers of all ages gather at the foot of the Adam Mickiewicz monument at the Main Market Square to present their latest creations. This year’s Kraków Nativity Scene Competition opens with a colourful procession of musicians and artists heading to the Krzysztofory Palace where the works are assessed. Each nativity scene is scored for its traditional aspects, architecture (modelled on Kraków’s buildings), colours, figures, moving elements, innovation, and general appearance.
