Unobtainable Earth

Founded in 1911, the Ethnographic Museum in Kraków is the oldest and largest such collection in Poland. Among the wealth of exhibits, an important place is taken by art described as folk, naïve or non-professional. The museum presents its collections at a new permanent exhibition Unobtainable Earth at the Town Hall on Wolnica Square in Kazimierz. We will see over 300 items created over the period of several centuries, from early sacral art to contemporary art brut. The main guide round the exhibition comes in the form of fragments of Czesław Miłosz’s texts from his tome Unobtainable Earth. They mark eight thematic spaces in which visitors can come face-to-face with the imaginations of former and contemporary artists, anonymous ones alongside those acclaimed by collectors, such as Epifaniusz Drowniak – Nikifor, Maria Wnęk, Dorota Lampart, Karol Wójciak – Heródek, Renata Bujak, Władysław Chajec and Katarzyna Gawłowa.
