To compensate us for the sense of loss of long days and warm evenings, October enters into our lives with a vengeance and a huge number of events. This year the opening is the stronger because the month begins with Sacrum Profanum: this time the festival introduces us to the world of the musical avant-garde and new music – the anniversary of Iceland's Bedroom Community, a performance by Mike Patton, and as many as three operas (including one for children aged up to three years!) are just examples of the attractions awaiting us. Another is waiting just around the corner – “Dislocation” is the slogan of this year's Unsound festival, the underground celebration, and an event that attracts declared fans from around the world to Kraków. The cultural landscape of the city is complemented by the brilliant-sounding programs of Cracow Theatrical Reminiscences, the Accordion Festival and the Patchlab festival dedicated to digital culture, as well as theatrical and musical performances, a multitude of exhibitions and countless club concerts.
A strong close for the month is promised by the Conrad Festival, whose events will host a select group of outstanding authors who address the issues the world lives with today, and publishers are getting ready for the Book Fair which takes place in parallel. At every step Kraków reminds us that it is a UNESCO City of Literature – and that this title (awarded just three years ago in October) is many times deserved.
