Kraków’s theatres are working hard to make their repertoires accessible to wider audiences, including foreign language speakers. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up in the next two months!
In November and December, Stary Theatre presents performances with English subtitles, including Savannah Bay staged by Józef Opalski, An Enemy of the People interpreted by Jan Klata and Halka directed by Anna Smolar and casting a fresh look at the tragic fate of the protagonist.
Monika Strzępka and Paweł Demirski present an extensive analysis of Polish society in two plays: A Year in Everyday Life in Central-Eastern Europe and the adult-only Captiveal.
Additionally, the theatre once again presents spectacles selected as part of its competition for up-and-coming directors. Karol Klugowski’s Present State of the World and Radosław B. Maciąg’s Long Live Poland/A Right-Wing Play explore the complex topics of independence and wars of the 20th century.
The J. Słowacki Theatre presents plays from recent months, including Radek Stępień’s Danton and Piotr Ratajczak’s Moron told from the perspective of a forty-year-old man with learning disabilities. In November, we will also see the premiere of Maja Kleczewska’s interpretation of Forefathers’ Eve. The classic drama returns to the theatre 120 years after its original staging by Stanisław Wyspiański.
We will also see Agnieszka Przepiórska’s monodrama Simona K. Crying in the Wilderness, Cezary Tomaszewski’s “sanatorium operetta” My Stay’s Almost Over and I’m Still Alone and an adaptation of Bolesław Prus’s The Doll. The latter two, as well as Błażej Peszek’s Love, will also feature Ukrainian subtitles.
In December, we will see Late Company by the Canadian playwright Jordan Tannahill, and One Thousand and One Nights. Scheherazade 1979 inspired by Oriana Fallaci and telling the tale of the Islamic revolution through the lens of old Persian stories.
Teatr Barakah also joins in with a presentation of an interpretation of Dorota Masłowska’s experimental novel Other People.
And that’s not all! Between 5 and 13 December, Kraków hosts the 14th Divine Comedy International Theatre Festival. All live performances and online streams will feature English subtitles.
