The key word of this year’s Szymanowski / Poland / World Festival is song. Therefore the programme features intimae and ascetic Three Lullabies, set to Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz poems and Symphony No. 3 “The Song of the Night” for orchestra, tenor and choir, a musical setting of a poem by the 13th-century Persian mystic Jalal ud-Din Rumi translated by Polish poet and friend of the composer Tadeusz Miciński. The Kraków Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of and Ameircam conductor Richard Rosenberg join soloists Urszula Kryger and Randall Bills in Mahler’s orchestral song cycle Das Lied von der Erde.

The programme focused on music from Central and Eastern Europe presents works by Janáček, Berger, Bartók, Zeljenka and Polish composers: besides Szymanowski also his friend Grzegorz Fitelberg, Ludomir Różycki and Witold Lutosławski. The festival closes with Krzysztof Penderecki’s Kaddish performed by Gerard Edery, one of the world’s foremost experts in the music of the Sephardic Diaspora. The final concert of the festival with such renowned performers as soprano Iwona Hossa and violinist Jakub Jakowicz will serve as the inauguration of the new artistic season of the Kraków Philharmonic.
