During the second half of February, Opera Rara brings rousing music, beautiful voices and captivating theatre to Kraków’s stages!
Discovering well-known works anew and bringing forth the forgotten ones – this motto has been Opera Rara’s guiding light ever since it was held as a cycle of individual events presented throughout the year. Therefore Capella Cracoviensis, organisers of this instalment of Opera Rara, presents Siface, a modern premiere of a pasticcio with music by Porpora, Hasse and Giacomelli with Korean-American countertenor Kangmin Justin Kim in the title role and male sopranos Bruno de Sá and Maayan Licht as his support on stage.
The vocal ensemble I Fagiolini under the baton of Robert Hollingworth casts a bridge towards the present day: the programme Au naturel (inspired by the cycle The Four Seasons by Breughel the Younger) takes us from the Renaissance composer Janequin to Howells who passed away in 1983, while Péter Eötvös’s tragicomedy The Golden Dragon (returning from OR 2021) explores some of the most pressing problems of today’s world.
The listeners will be confronted not once but twice with the famous song cycle by Franz Schubert – Winterreise. The director Cezary Tomaszewski presents it in a form of a theatre play with the role of the main character, lost in snow-covered landscape and his own emotions, split into female singers, dancers and an actress. The “classical” approach to The Winter Journey will be a real treat, brought to the audience by its most outstanding performer and expert, English star tenor Ian Bostridge.
The list of exquisite vocal recitals features also: Anne Sofie van Otter with interpretations of French mélodies, Sandrine Piau accompanied by Capella Cracoviensis in Mozart arias, and Thomas E. Bauer in Schumann’s Dichterliebe.
