Five days, eight concerts that have all but sold out right from the get-go. Maturity – the second instalment of the festival triptych that started last year with Youth – is now a thing of the past. To sweeten the wait for the next edition, we are going to offer you three more concerts as part of the mini-series entitled Sacrum Profanum: Post Scriptum.
We have seen concerts that broke the mould and brought back long-forgotten classics. The 19th Sacrum Profanum Festival will surely be remembered for its tribute to Stanisław Lem, the reminder of Barbara Buczek’s work during the first performance in a private apartment in the long history of the event, as well as the Arditti Quartet anniversary concert. What is still left to wait for are three evenings that will perfectly complement the music presented at the festival. On 20 October, join us for the first Post Scriptum – the Execution of Intelligence , a concert by Reinhold Friedel in the unique space of the Polish Art Gallery of the National Museum in Krakow. 14 November will see ICE Kraków hosting the Vortex of Spectralism concert performed by the Spółdzielnia Muzyczna contemporary ensemble. A month later, on 17 December to be exact, we will join the ensemble for the last instalment of the series – it is going to be a Bad Acid Trip.
The short, yet intense festival has ended – but most importantly, we could meet live once again. I am glad that various musical traditions could resound freely, and that we had a creative and mature dialogue between contemporary, alternative, avant-garde and even classical music. But this is not the end – join us for three more Post Scriptum concerts, said Krzysztof Pietraszewski, curator of the Sacrum Profanum Festival since 2016.
Last year, while organising the online edition of the festival, we revamped its format. We decided to spread the Sacrum Profanum Festival over six weeks, creating a kind of utopian slow festival. This year we are trying to transplant this idea, to add a sequel to the festival in the form of a mini-series of concerts, focusing on the most important works by the undisputed, well-known, most important composers of our time. We want to fill the gaps in the repertoire, with Spółdzielnia Muzyczna contemporary ensemble performing Grisey's famous Vortex Temporum and Romitelli's alternative Professor Bad Trip, while Reinhold Friedl is preparing perhaps the last premiere of Karkowski’s piece. In today's rush for premieres and the huge supply of new works, it is increasingly difficult to refer to a common canon. We hope to build a steady and loyal new music audience around these recurring concerts. I will argue that this is necessary and possible if we ensure a regular presence of the contemporary repertoire at concerts in Krakow, he added.
