Cracovia Sacra Night 2021

We mark the feast of Assumption of Mary by heading to Kraków’s churches and monasteries to admire beautiful paintings of the Virgin, following the motto of Cracovia Sacra Night 2021 “Images of Mary in Sacral Art”. The oldest iconographic type, dating back to the Middle Ages, are Cracovian Hodegetrias – depictions of the Virgin Mary holding Baby Jesus and pointing to Him as the source of salvation for humankind. The name is derived from the original painting, held at the Hodegon Monastery in Constantinople; this style of icon is also known as Our Lady of the Way. As well as concerts and tours of venues including the Sigismund Tower at Wawel Castle, there will be exhibitions at the Carmelite Church, the Congregation of the Mission Church, the Cistercian Monastery in Mogiła, the Benedictine Abbey in Tyniec and the Benedictine Sisters Abbey in Staniątki.
