From its first edition in 2019, Royal Opera Festival has taken Gioacchino Rossini, the Italian master of belcanto, as its patron and the centre point of the event. One of the main goals of the festival is to present Rossini’s less well-known works.
Therefore, the 2021 edition brings his two rarely performed operas: La scala di seta and Elisabetta, regina d'Inghilterra, together with Joseph Haydn’s The Creation. Why Haydn? The composer of the Viennese School played an important role in the music education of Rossini – the young Giacchino as the 10-year-old studied Haydn’s partitures, and in the later years, he used to produce his works on stage, including The Creation. Would he be pleased with the version presented during the Royal Opera Festival?
